Following the industrial revolution there has been no other change as notable as the one we are witnessing with the irruption of the Internet and new digital technologies which have changed everything, including of course, our work methodologies.

In the heart of the Internet there have appeared new work methodologies which empower and provide independence and autonomy to workers. In line with this cultural and employment transformation which places people at the heart of the company, new offices are designed which, years ago were unimaginable although still today, many of these offices are designed following a traditional distribution system, where the individualization of the work station outstands and translates into an important lack of socialization and collaboration.

On the opposite side, many companies, following the open space trend, have abused of the elimination of barriers, with spaces that do not ease concentration and the lack of spaces for the generation of collaborative actions.

Offices promote social relations

Today in offices coexist different generations and the younger ones are used to working outside the office. In this case, we all have the basic need of feeling part of a community and share with others. Therefore, companies have to offer these new professionals the necessary tools to work under the same brand from any part of the world. They will have to provide them also with spaces where they can temporarily feel “at home”. Offices do not only encourage social relationships but rather they strengthen them.

Collaborative spaces for new employees

Today workers, especially the younger ones, attend offices to collaborate and share with the team. Therefore, it is so important in terms of motivation and efficiency to promote and ease employment flexibility of employees and to provide all tools, spaces and technologies necessary for people to be really able to give the best of them in a flexible culture; Tools and spaces that ease the exchange of knowledge, strategies and experiences favouring team spirit and collaboration.

This proves that if a worker has to walk more than 30 minutes or change floors to communicate with another colleague, he will do so by email when immediate contact would solve the issue immediately and more efficiently in many cases.

Offices ease new work methodologies

New headquarters are being designed these days to boost key aspects for the growth of companies such as co-creation, creativity and innovation.

These offices give special importance to collaborative spaces where there is more interaction and the exchange of experiences, knowledge and ideas. According to the study “More than One” by Ofita, these spaces represent already 65% of an office. Sixty one per cent of meetings are scheduled and last an average of 23 minutes and 3% are unexpected lasting 18 minutes.

This means, meetings held more frequently are those which involve few people and last little time. For this reason, offices today count with many spaces that favour unexpected meetings, without making a booking such as this informal area:

Depending on their use, collaborative spaces can be classified into four categories: informal, formal, virtual and shared (the open space).

Alternatives among which workers and collaborators can freely choose depending on the duties they will develop.

Moreover, to satisfy the flexibility required by an office, polyvalent collaborative spaces are also necessary, easily configurable for different uses and number of people. They can be created using for example the Forthink furniture line with elements such as the use of mobile stands.
